The Visible Art Project has been conceived by me, Antonia Grove, Artistic Director of the dance theatre company Probe (See probeproject.com for more details).

VAP was born out of themes in my most recent work for Probe, Now You See It.

Now You See It deals with issues of visibility and being seen, my own feelings of invisibility and the fear of missing something important. In connection with this year’s Brighton Festival theme ‘Everyday Epic’, Now You See It, looks at small ideas and their mammoth consequences.

You can catch Now You See It at The Attenborough Centre (ACCA) on 14th May 7.30pm as part of Brighton Festival.

VAP It is about using Art as a tool with which to enable people to have a voice, to be seen, to be heard, to be visible.

VAP  has been established as an audience engagement project that I will be running alongside performances of Now You See It, and also as a stand alone community project in its own right.

I will be putting together a collection of VAP Artwork made by people from communities all over Brighton & Hove during the coming months. Each individual work will be shared anonymously on @VisibleArtProj Twitter, Visible Art Club Facebook page and visibleartproj instagram account.

I will then look at different ways to Exhibit the work publicly and an official Event will be planned to launch the project, a VAP website with a full online exhibition and a crowd-funding campaign to ensure the continuation of the project.

Premiere 23rd February!!!

Posted on: February 12th, 2017 by Antonia Grove

Well despite the lack of current AC funding I will be premiering my new work in 10 days at LPAC Lincoln! It’s not how I’d like it to be, but it’s my profession, its what I do and I have a piece I’m very proud of that needs to be launched.

Thanks to Sue Maclaine (co-director) & Gwen Van spijk (Producer) for their continued brilliant work and support, and for Greig Cooke (boyfriend & web developer/designer) for knocking together a poster/flyer and doing numerous other things to help.

Very much looking forward to putting it out there in front of the audience.  If anyone is able to get there from I’d love to see you!  Craig Morrow is hosting a post show afterwards.

Creation week 1 @The Point Eastleigh

Posted on: February 15th, 2016 by Antonia Grove

Great week being creative in The Creation Space at The Point in Eastleigh.

We have Lift off with the project, ‘NOW YOU SEE IT’,  and its getting out of my head and off the paper and out into the space.

The sharing to staff on the friday provided me with some lovely thoughtful, insightful, encouraging and intelligent responses to the work so far. The Point staff are a curious, engaged and supportive bunch, which makes what you are trying to do as an artist feel worthwhile!

I also took my Art Desk project with me and set it up in the offices four the staff to make use of. This was the first time I had set it up after its success in the South East Dance offices last year. Wasn’t sure how it might go down and whether the staff would get into it… well they REALLY did, and by the end of the week there was a full wall of work they had created- fun, political, emotional, crazy. It seemed to be a real stress buster.

I’ve let them hold on to it over the coming weeks, on their demand, and given them the task to respond to my sharing through art! I look forward to seeing how they respond to the heading ‘Now You See It’

Happy New Year

Posted on: January 4th, 2016 by Antonia Grove No Comments

So… I set out to blog about my work throughout 2015. I thought I would talk about the research process I was going through, and share my thoughts and ideas in a really frank and honest way.

But I didn’t.

I thought about it.

I thought, ‘I really should blog about this’, but I really didn’t want to. I was happy to bury myself in my cave of creativity, invite others to come and talk and play and watch what I’d been making, but I wasn’t happy to document this very real and personal investigation on a blog.

The reality of reflecting on my process whilst in the thick of it was not what I had expected.

Either I’m really inside the process- struggling, present, experiencing all those very real emotions and challenges associated with the creation of art- or I’m outside myself, writing about it, desecting it, editing what I want the worldwide web to know and what I want to keep to myself for now.

I didn’t feel that I could share my thoughts with complete honesty, nor did I feel that in blogging about my process I might gain any deeper insight into what I was making or how I might do that.

For me, there are clearly aspects of my journey towards creating a new work that I want to grapple with alone or in face to face discussion with people who will help me on that journey. I think that’s ok, I don’t think I’m alone in feeling this.

I feel slightly torn though. I’m not secretive, or a recluse. The door is never shut, I am more than happy to talk to anyone who might be interested about my work. I always like to engage in conversation about my ideas. But posting a blog?…That feels like a lonely task. A covert operation. One sided. Ellusive. Guarded.

Ok It could be fun… but will anyone actually read it?… I will need to become good at this. Funny, or witty, or clever, or absurd, or political, or….

So I think my new challenge for 2016, if the Arts Council help support my new project, is to find a joy in this blogging thing.

I have no idea who might read it. But if you are reading it, and if you ever do read one of my posts, whoever you are, maybe you could just say ‘Hello!’…  that would be really exciting!

So Happy New Year, and let 2016 be a year full of exciting and honest new works of art!

Antonia x
